New Years Resolution: Do You Even Bother?

It’s New Years Day, the day that millions of people around the world make promises to themselves to do something in particular moving forward.  Most folks call these promises “Resolutions”, but I like to call them “Torture Sticks”.

I personally dislike the act of creating resolutions because they truly aren’t effective.  After New Years, I see friends and family torture themselves into doing something they DON’T want to do.  That’s why our gyms are full of new faces in January then back to it’s normal occupancy in February.  These folks show up because they felt they need to change using New Years as a catalyst.  They knew they had to change something, so they torture themselves to make it happen even when their heart isn’t there to follow through.

Unfortunately, if you want to change, you need to change for yourself on your own schedule.  Not on the schedule of a calendar year.  In my opinion, if you can make yourself a promise with no strings attached, like waiting for something significant to occur in your life, then the magnitude and follow through of that change will be greater and lasting.

If you know you want to lose weight, just do it.  If you want to be richer, start learning how now.  Don’t wait for the next holiday or major event.  Be the change you want to see.

Happy New Years.  Let’s make it big in 2010. Drink much, be safe, and laugh a lot.

Find alternatives to a behavior that you want to change, and make this part of your resolution plan. So you want to quit smoking but you smoked to relax yourself? What other forms of relaxation are available to you.

Send out hit squads who not merely kill the people behind the botnet herders, but also leave evidence behind that implies that the people killed were involved in homosexual love triangles (because the Russian Mafia is notoriously homophobic).

On this note, actually people who keep talking are seeking help in a way, just that they aren’t conscious of it. Before speaking, they feel cluttered about the situation. Having an outlet to air their problems is a method of helping them get clarity and gain resolution. Your role here can be a listener and/or an enabler, depending on what you do.
