The Creativity Journal of Awesomeness

28 December 2010 35 Comments

I am not quite sure why, but I have been in the mood of admissions recently.  Maybe it’s the holiday season creeping up on me or maybe it’s because of my new found glory in an open-sourced life.

My Admission

I have kept a diary since 1999.  I’m probably going to receive hell from people that know me in real life, but I’m ready for it.  Bring it!  What!  My diary is my book of secrets.  It holds the power to much of my creativity. Whenever I’m in a inspirational rut, all I have to do is flip through its pages and I would find something to write about.

This is no traditional diary full of daily musings or emotional cries for help, but one filled with aphorisms and/or phrases that were never created to be memorable.  In fact, I have a few inserts from from a C++ book that I felt were profound enough when taken OUT of context.  Whenever I read a book, I would highlight passages or important concepts that I felt were “words to live by”, and found a home for them in my nifty little log.

At first, the diary started out as a present I was going to give to an ex-girlfriend who introduced me to the world of aphorisms.  But when she dumped me because she was going to college and did not want to be tied down (so she says), I wasn’t about to run after her and say, “But I have this aphorism book I never gave you!”.  After that moment, the diary took on a life of it’s own.  In 9 years, I have amassed close to [have an estimate here]

This diary has been a huge sense of accomplishment for me.  It’s a huge testament to the idea that goals can be met through a culmination of simple tasks. It goes to show that the small little things you do in life, like adding in a few quotes in a diary or placing a few dollars in savings, can lead up to monumental developments.

Don’t get me wrong, having a diary is nothing to brag about for me.  “Hi, my name is Zen.  I like to drink beer, work out, and write in my diary.”  However, owning one is definitely something I’m proud of.  And that, is truly awesome!

Do you keep a written diary or journal?   What do you write in it? Does anyone know about it?  Inquiring minds want to know.

I have a pink journal with a clasp (I know – very lame) that I want to put to good use. It has 250+ yellowed pages. I was thinking about starting a diary, but I knew I’m not very good at it, so is there something else I could use it for? Logs, records, food journals, etc.? Please tell me some of your ideas. I’d really like some input.

It’s neat to see a poetry journal– something usually stereotyped as stuffy, effete, and distant– actually doing good in the community, and for me as an editor it’s an inspiring piece of work…

In the movie, Holly has an account where she writes in her journal titled “girl on the move”. Can anyone suggest a site that can recreate the same layout and features as shown briefly in the movie, or does anyone know a site that allows total creativity in making a journal/web site. I know of Myspace, and friendster, and Hi5 but they aren’t really what I am looking for. Any help will be much appreciated. Thanks

having a journal is a good thing, but sometimes there things that you just don’t want to share with anyone, but just write them down to get rid of them, otherwise it’s all a Russian roulette that you can’t control..otherwise Zen on!

I’ve never been a huge stamper, but over the course of the last year, I’ve been using stamps more and more, as well as carving my own to use in my journals. Awhile ago, Roben and I brainstormed the idea of creating stamps from my handwriting and artwork, and last week, the test stamps arrived.

They look amazing! Holding them in my hands still has the sparkles of being in a dream — these are real stamps created from my work, my art, my handwriting.

Could be but as long as it is not having a detrimental affect on your life it;s better to just let it be. Everyone has moods…. good and bad but unless it inhibits you from a normal life then it is just normal mood swings.
