What the heck is RSS?

RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication.  In the blogging world, RSS is used to subscribe to a blog and then receive notifications of any new blog posts from any blogs you are subscribed to.  By subscribing via RSS, you don’t have to visit the actual blog to read the latest content.  This is because RSS works in partnership with feed reading websites like Google Reader or Bloglines (I personally use Google Reader), or you can use standalone feed reader software that you install on your computer (this means that while you still need to be connected to the net, you can receive notifications of new blog posts without actually going online).

Instead of visiting all the blogs you subscribe to, you simply go to Google Reader (or your feed reader software) and all current blog posts are displayed in the one place ready for you to peruse and read at your leisure.  Google Reader automatically gathers and updates any new posts so the ones displayed are always up to date and current.

The purpose of RSS is to make it easier and more efficient to keep track of your favorite blogs and their content.
